Curriculum

At Rudheath we pride ourselves in delivering a broad and balanced curriculum that is designed to reflect our wider world and our children’s place within it. Our curriculum intends to capture children’s interests and develop their understanding by creating meaningful learning opportunities within a knowledge-rich framework. In a global climate of rapid change, our approach is to ensure that learning is memorable, relevant and purposeful so that pupils are ready, academically and personally, for the next stage in their education and beyond.

The National Curriculum (or for Nursery and Reception, the Early Years Curriculum) providesthe initial basis for all planning, ensuring coverage of all subjects as well as an accumulative progression in learning. Each year group has a bespoke curriculum designed to inspire a love of learning whilst building the knowledge and skills children need to acquire. Carefully sequenced planning ensures concepts are taught in a precise and purposeful way.

At the core of our approach lies English and Maths. High quality literature and Reading is at the heart of our approach to English whilst fluency, problem solving and reasoning are central to Maths. Competence and confidence in basic skills is key to ensuring our children are able to access the full curriculum.

We have high expectations for all children and believe that all children are capable of achieving and succeeding in their learning. Through maintaining a broad and balanced curriculum where concepts are delivered in depth we aim to ensure that all childrenmeet end of year outcomes. Our approach is fully inclusive and considers the needs of more vulnerable children including those with SEND or from disadvantaged backgrounds. Engaging children in their learning is integral to our approach where we promote effective feedback and dialogue, collaborative ways of working and practical tasks. We aim to enhance learning and provide wider opportunities through planning for supportive Homework tasks, Educational visits or visitors, Outdoor learning including Forest Schools, Sporting and Cultural Events and well-designed themed weeks. In addition, we focus on children as learners by developing their character behaviour and skills such as reflection, resilience and independence. With a shared sense of purpose our staff and children work together through the curriculum to support and facilitate our vision of ‘Inspiring Minds, Building Futures’.

Our Curriculum Maps outline the key knowledge, skills and vocabulary that are intended to be learnt for each subject for each year group across the year.
